Overview

The acronym CALS has changed from "Computer-Aided Logistics Support” into “Continuous Acquisition and Life Cycle Support”. This change reflects the development and evolution of an idea. At first there was a punched-card technology of centralised information bases.
Today the focus is set on integration of business, support and design processes .

The rapid progress of the computer-based information technology enables database and network techniques to be used in business processes within and among enterprises or government and commercial organisations.

The idea of CALS for common share of information leads to integrated information systems and in consequence, to integrated business processes.

The idea culminates in “Concurrent Engineering”, the reengineering and reorganisation of business processes from design, manufacturing and support into an unique, integrated and team-worked process.

The continuation of the idea of CALS is today understood as Life Cycle Management.

In this seminar the interfaces between design branches like CM (Configuration Management), CAD (Computer-aided Design), CAE (Computer-aided Engineering) and CAM (Computer-aided Manufacturing) to CIM (Computerintegrated Manufacturing) and PPS (Production Planning Systems) are discussed, further on the interface with the logistic support system, including the
Spares Management (based on ASD2000M) and Technical Documenta-tion (based on ASD 1000D/ IETM) will be discussed in detail.
